Buitenlands nieuws: Meer en meer wijnboeren failliet in Murray

The Murray Valley wine growing region in Australia is set to lose another 150 growers this year, after a disastrous season of disease and low grape prices.

Five years ago, the region had 1,200 winegrape growers. Now there are fewer than half that number.

And with the loss of Exceptional Circumstances assistance for most growing regions, industry groups in Victoria, South Australia and NSW have combined to ask the Federal Government for more assistance.

Mark McKenzie, from Murray Valley Winegrowers, says they are also taking the unusual step of telling growers to get out now, if they can.

"So the message that we are now starting to convey to people is that if they are already in very significant financial difficulties, and, unfortunately, there are some significant number of people who are, where they can it is probably time for them to decide whether they actually want to bat on."
